**Summary**
The Philosophy & Cognitive Science BA (Hons) combines a major in Philosophy with dual minors in Data Science and Psychology.
Your major studies in Philosophy will investigate topics including ethics, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of the mind, and the philosophy of science. The Data Science minor explores the techniques underpinning artificial intelligence including coding in Python, machine learning, and natural language processing, as well as theoretical and practical issues surrounding AI and data ethics. The Psychology minor surveys fundamental principles, concepts, experiments, and issues in the major areas of contemporary scientific psychology. Together, these elements provide a very broad and deep foundation in the study of naturally and artificially intelligent systems, and teach the skills required for life and work in the 21st century.
**Teaching & Learning**
You will typically experience an average of 9 or more hours of high-quality contact time in each teaching week, in considerably smaller groups than are the norm for UK institutions at the undergraduate level.
Your contact hours will include a mixture of teaching methods best suited to the subject matter and to achieve the learning outcomes for each individual course. Teaching formats include small group tutorials, seminars, and lectures of between 10 and 60 students for your degree courses.
**Where can this degree take you?**
Graduates of the Philosophy & Cognitive Science BA (Hons) will have a wide range of employable skills that can be applied in a diverse variety of occupations. They may find work in the tech sector in areas such as digital humanities, computational social science, or data journalism. They may progress into the public sector, helping to provide regulatory oversight of artificial intelligence applications. They may progress to a one-year conversion programme and then become a practicing clinical psychologist. They may apply their understanding of human behaviour and communication skills in the commercial sector. They may work in the charitable, third sector. They may progress to further study in philosophy and/or the cognitive sciences. As is often the way for philosophy majors, they are likely to find themselves in positions that are interesting, valuable, and therefore enjoyable, and well-remunerated by mid-career.
