Course Summary

BA Interior Design at KLC School of Design doesn’t just help you develop a high level of design and technical knowledge you need to graduate with a BA (Hons) Interior Design. You will also learn the practical application of those attained skills tempered with real-world practical experience, so you can go to residential and commercial building sites and companies and feel both capable and confident. This binary outcome is achieved by enhanced teaching hours in a collaborative relationship with your tutors, your peers and visiting industry professionals. You will co-learn, reflect and critique as a part of a team, more often on live industry projects with a social or ethical focus. With full academic and industry support, student teams will actively grow and help each other build their professional practice and business administration knowledge to a level rarely seen on other courses. You are not left alone on this course and from the first term will also receive proactive welfare support to ensure you holistically develop into a confident, well-rounded interior design graduate with multiple work placements already in your CV individually matched by our well-connected and proactive careers team.

Course Details - Modules

BA Interior Design - Year 1, Level 4 Term One Design Project 1 - Pavilion Design Project 2 - Pop Up Space The BA Degree starts at the very beginning of interior design training, with students exploring how they research design, channel creativity from their surroundings and record these ideas within a sketchbook. Students will investigate how people use spaces and explore living rituals to understand spatial planning for interior design. Core skills are introduced such as technical drawing, colour rendering, one and two-point perspective drawing and freehand sketching. Sample boards, model-making and mixed media workshops are also included, with digital collage and digital furniture boards leading into the teaching of SketchUp. Weekly inspiration days take students out of the classroom and into London, with visits to design showrooms, city architecture, the V&A and the Tate Modern. Term Two Assessed Debate Reflective Essay - Design Evolution & Trends Design Project 3 - Show Apartment Practical knowledge will continue to develop as students are introduced to principles behind kitchen and bathroom design, as well as colour and lighting all of which will be applied within a residential project. Students get an introduction to Professional Practice and the key abilities they will need to develop as interior designers. Visits for this term include ones which illustrate the evolution of design, from the fabulous Art Deco style Freemason's Hall to the elaborate Middle Eastern-inspired Leighton House. The term ends with the teaching of Photoshop. Term Three Design Project 4 - Atmospheres In order to generate slick visuals to communicate their design, students will learn AutoCAD and develop new computer-aided design skills alongside SketchUp and Photoshop. They will explore lighting design at a higher level, with inspiration days supporting this advanced learning. Graphics for design are introduced to enhance students’ project presentations, as well as develop budding portfolios. Professional Practice is developed through workshops on budgets and costings, as well as giving insight into building regulations. Inspiration days will also provide students with first-hand knowledge of lighting, graphics, utilising space and form and visiting Clerkenwell Design Week. BA Interior Design - Year 2, Level 5 Term Four Design Project 5 - Exhibition Space Design Project 6 - Detailed Working Drawings Students that are eligible for work experience will be aided in getting placements over the Christmas holidays. Term Five Design Project 7 - Large Commercial Design Term Six Group Project - Design Changes Lives Design Project 8 - Final Project Optional Summer break work experience BA Interior Design - Year 3, Level 6 Term Seven Design Project 9 - Design Concept and Commerical Development Dissertation - 5,000 word historical and critical dissertation Report 1 - Professional Practice & Business Administration Report 2 - Construction, Technology and Environment Term Eight Design Project 10 Design - Synthesis and Resolution - Social Design Dissertation/Reports - Continued and finalised Term Nine Design Project 11 - Finalise Design Proposal. In the last term, students will develop and finalise their design proposal. On completion and presentation of the final project, they will be attending a series of introduction days with suppliers, manufacturers and professionals from the commercial interior design sector. Throughout the course, the Career Service offers 1-2-1 sessions for portfolio and CV advice, internships and interviews. The course culminates in a final, celebratory Exhibition and Graduation Ceremony, attended by prominent designers and professionals from the interior design industry.

Entry Requirements for Advanced Entry (Year 2 and Beyond)

To enter for Level 6 students will need: - Level 5 Foundation Degree (FdA) or equivalent in a design-related subject area (i.e. Higher National Diploma / Level 5 qualification) - A digital portfolio of work demonstrating a variety of skills, including evidence of technical drawing and computer-aided design programmes - Applicants should also have the necessary computer skills for a degree level course and students are required to have a PC laptop computer. We are able to accept international applicants onto this course, subject to the following: IELTS score of 6.5 (www.ielts.org)

Additional Fee Information

The fee is £6,945.00 PER LEVEL. The BA (Hons) Interior Design degree consists of 3 levels - Level 4, 5 and 6 which take approximately 18-20 months each to complete. As this is a Part Time course Student Finance England will cover all of the course fees.
